Led by vocalist Rully Shabara (known from Senyawa), ZOO formed in 2005 at Yogyakarta are pioneers of Indonesian noise rock experimentation. ZOO is the band developed a crossover between post-punk, experimental rock, noise, traditional percussion and elements of Balinese trance ceremonies. In recent years, ZOO evolved into an ongoing conceptual project that gradually introduces the (re-)invention of a post-apocalyptic civilization, addressing a specific theme with each of their albums. The band created a narrative about the prehistoric 'Samasthamarta' and its Khawagaka teachings, along with its own language and writing system, relics and rituals.
